Air India the Airline
Air India is the national flag carrier of India. Air service in India started in 1932, when J.R.D Tata, considered the father of Indian civil aviation flew from Karachi’s Drigh Road airport in a single-engine aircraft to Mumbai. Headquartered in Mumbai, it operates from two major hubs, the Indira Gandhi International airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport.
Tata airlines became a public limited company in 1946 under the name Air India. The airline was acquired by the state in 1948 and soon and the first long-haul flight took off from Bombay to London on 8 June, 1948. The first Boeing was delivered in 1960 and jet service to London was also introduced the same year. On June 11, 1962, Air India became the first all jet airline in the world.
